Principles of Design Research
The painting I looked at is called "Nighthawks" by Edward Hopper.
- It is late at night, and there are a few people sitting in a coffee shop. We are looking through the window at them. The outside is lit by the street light and the coffee shop. The people in the shop are not talking. There is a feeling of emptiness and isolation.
- Balance: Assymetrical
- Because the contrast is greatest by the woman (the two male customers are dark on a dark back round, and the worker is wearing white on a white back round), we notice her first (she is wearing red). Then we notice the other people.
- The dark lines of the diner create a frame. The window behind them is another frame. They could almost be outside. They are enclosed, yet exposed.

WOW! great description molly. good use of the vocabulary but more importantly, a great reading of the painting and what it is about.
